Norma Winstone’s “Drifter”

Always knew he’d do what he wanted to do,
The way that a wind that changes its direction will turn
And leave you wondering
Where did summer go.

And now he looks around him and detects the coming of the rain.
The tumbleweed rolls ‘cross the plain,
His heels in the dust that lifts leave no impression at all,
No sign he came here.

Moving on again.
A wandering star is he,
A shadow that moves through the day
And is lost.

Somewhere is the girl with the Spanish eyes
That thinks of a drifter she knew long ago.
The fatherless child grown and gone away,
Resembles a stranger that he’ll never know.
